Economic challenges in one jurisdiction can have an impact on trading partners. All jurisdictions conducting business with domestic and international partners look for reliable indicators with which to assess each other's credit worthiness and thereby lower their own risks. Credit rating agencies provide such indicators in their assessments of a jurisdiction's ability to meet its debts. In its function of managing the provincial debt, the Ontario Financing Authority reports on such ratings, which are periodically reassessed by these agencies.
