"Time limits play a role in the definitions of "parent" and "spouse" that are contained in the Family Relations Act. These time limits serve two purposes: they establish when certain rights and obligations arise; and they set deadlines for bringing certain claims. This discussion paper looks at ways these time limits-often called "limitation periods"-might be changed to make the legislation simpler, fairer and more certain.
